The International Festival "Theater der Welt" will not take place from 14 to 31 May 2020 as planned, but is to be postponed until June 2021. This decision was taken by the festival's sponsors (the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the state capital Düsseldorf in coordination with the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media) together with the festival organisers (International Theatre Institute/ITI and Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus) against the background of the corona virus.
Further planning and implementation of the extensive international programme with around 400 participating artists was no longer possible under the currently imposed regulations on international travel and visa issuance. International co-productions and cooperations are an essential part of the festival. However, many of the projects and productions that have already begun require groups of artists to meet and work together internationally at different locations. Due to the current exit and entry bans, these artistic cooperations must now be suspended for the foreseeable future.

For Theater der Welt 2020 in Düsseldorf, the German ITI Centre has developed its own studio project in cooperation with the European Festivals Association. We are working with all participants to adapt the studio for next year.
The Atelier is an international platform for discourse and creative experimentation for around 40 young theatre professionals.
During the festival in June 2021, it offers participants with different aesthetic, cultural and political experiences space for artistic and discursive exchange.
Juli 2023 angegeben.
